Controlling and balancing the domestic hot water zone temperature is vital for safety and comfort. It’s also something that must be done in every multi-story building.
No one wants to be surprised by a sudden shock of cold water or scalded by hot water. But the real danger is what occurs after that initial shock. Sudden spikes in temperature cause many bathing injuries, whether it’s a 2nd‐ or 3rd-degree burn or a slip and fall when trying to maneuver away from a sudden cold blast of water.
At the same time, balancing and rebalancing valves as required when using traditional circuit setters is frustrating, time intensive and expensive.
Jeff Silverburg, President of JBS Plumbing, is all too familiar with this situation. He told us that when working on a multi-floor hotel, his crew would have to get the first floor balanced, then move on to the second floor to make needed adjustments there. Those second-floor adjustments would then cause the first floor to be off again. Back they’d go to the first floor to make further changes.
Silverburg said it could take his crew three to four weeks to balance a hotel, and even then, he’s not sure they got it perfect. Hour after hour, day after day, and week after week to achieve something only close to satisfaction.
It can be so frustrating that some contractors will bring in a specialty balancing contractor, adding more cost to the project.
The good news is that you don’t have to suffer through that process.
Enter the TempFlow® Thermostatic Balancing Valve
Simply installing the TempFlow valve after the last hot water device in each loop will self-adjust and balance the recirculated flow and heat loss for each TempFlow controlled zone. The valve’s ability to self-adjust ensures fast and consistent delivery of hot water to all fixtures all the time.
The premium for the TempFlow more than paid for itself in the time saved and frustration avoided for Silverburg and his crew when they gave them a try in a 150-room hotel.
“The TempFlow is more expensive than flow control valves (aka circuit setters), but it’s worth it. I’d never buy anything else,” said Silverburg.
TempFlow helps installers and facility operators come out ahead in several ways:
- They save the labor from balancing the system, which can easily take 2-3 people nearly a day and allows installers to reassign that labor more profitably.
- A balanced system provides hot water to everyone 24/7 and makes for happy tenants and customers.
- Contractors in regions that enjoy different seasons will appreciate not returning to a building every spring and fall to go through the balancing procedure. Using the TempFlow eliminates that uncertain impact on operating budgets.
Features & Benefits
